@Marios : yes, that is a real problem *for those clients*. If they don't "get it", what are they paying for and what are you doing for them? I suspect there is frequently disappointment on both sides of the transaction, when tactical (SEO) goals don't align with strategic business goals.

Not every potential client is a promising opportunity.

While I agree wholeheartedly with the approach described in item 1, it's really frustrating when a client doesn't get it and they can't get past request to optimize page x for keyword y.

Anyway, thanks to you both for putting this interview together.

Thanks Todd - I enjoyed the thoughtful questions.

@John Roberts, yes you guys responded right away with considered comments, which I'm sure was appreciated by readers who wondered about how far to trust OpenDNS. My statements here addressed Todd's question about critique, noting how thoughtful and reasonable questions should not be hard to address - as you demonstrated. I wasn't ignoring you.

@Tim: I've been lucky to maintain my consulting business through word of mouth referrals and recommendations, since I started full time in 2003. I do see a need for an informative brochure though now that SEO/Search is maturing as a business strategy. That will probably appear at http://www.UpperLeftPlacement.com sometime this year.

To clarify my comment above:

John said: "I like to remind people that johnon.com is a personal blog, and not a corporate brochure."

So I was curious if John markets his consultancy somewhere else (ie a different website)?

I'd note that two of us from OpenDNS commented in detail on the post about our launch, addressing your questions and concerns head on. And we've continued to provide more details about how we operate in the 18+ months we've been operating. We're now serving more than 3 million customers daily, and trust in our infrastructure and our ethics is a foundation of that growth.

When you write: "That should not have been hard to address, should it?" you're ignoring the fact that we did reply and address your questions.

Cheers,

John Roberts
