Does article marketing really work? I am new to SEO but it seems to me that any activity that could be automated or mass produced will add little SEO value. What do you think?

Yes it does, for drivign traffic and helping rankings too, but proper "article marketing" is not automated or mass produced. It just means writing good articles and share them in good quality article directories for oithers to read, share, comment on, and use on their sites.
