Tom Hale here. I've agreed to help out in some loosely defined way, to get these forums up and at least wandering, if not exactly running.
The idea of categories was brought up early on. How many? What to call them? or as I mentioned, whether they were even needed at this point.
It was suggested that there be two categories, something like Techinical, Non-Technical. Since these early trial decisions are left up to the implementer (whoever takes the time to do it), the labels may change somewhat, but I think the general principal is agreed to.
Now…….to the manual

Well, most forums have like a section where you just put random stuff and smalltalk that doesn't belong or fit into any other category, and I thought we could have something like that here too cause it's kind of missing? It's really helpful for the community and everything because people somehow get to know each other better and so on. Also, it gives people a break from the main topic of the site, or from SEM in this case. Let’s try it!

Go ahead and talk small in this SEM Business Forum for now Joan. If the small starts overwhelming the biz we can create another category.
We absolutely appreciate the suggestion and participation.
btw, sorry for the late approvals. Seems to be some formatting issues that caused some hesitation.

Joan – You need to please be sure that you;re not copy/pasting from MS word or anything else. If you need to compose offline, be sure to paste into Notepad first, before copy/pasting here.
Also, regarding random stuff and small talk, and giving people a break from the main topic of the site, we at SEMpdx can discuss this as a board, however, I'd likely vote to keep the small talk elsewhere, and getting a break from the site topic for me means just going to some other site.
All contributions and posts are moderated by volunteers, and having enough free time to moderate off topic small talk makes things more difficult.
Thank you though for the input, and we really do appreciate your participation…

I han't thought about the extra workload un-search related small talk would generate.
I agree with Scott.

Categories help organize things on your site (blogstuff, wordpress, etc.). They’re for your blog use only. Tags allow you to be searched. So when someone writes about wordpress and they use the category wordpress, then if someone clicks through to the wordpress tag, they might find your blog. It helps you get more search engine attention.
