Thanks to Joe Morin, I was able to attend a performance of Cirque de Soleil’s “KA” at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Plot really doesn’t apply in this sort of show. However, I saw some stuff performed live that should be impossible to do off a movie set.

Imagine a peaceful village scene. All of a sudden, the village gets attacked by archers & other warriors and a hardcore battle gets fought right in front of you. Then, without any stoppage in action, the whole scene shifts to a ship a sea caught in a horrible storm that gets tossed around before sinking. This isn’t the movies folks…this is live.

Then, on several occasions, the stage would tilt up to a minimum of a 45 degree angle (or even nearly vertical). On these steep slopes, the actors would be fighting battles while plummeting down the stage (or falling off of it entirely), catching onto handholds that perhaps would stop their fall…which could give way at any time. These live action scenes would go on for minutes and the choreography was simply mindblowing…this wasn’t CGI (though it looked like it)…it was real.

As great a time as I had at the Pubcon conference, nothing topped the performance of KA.
