1)      Please give us your background and tell us what you do for a living (w/ links).

I’m an Oregonian through and through. I was born and raised in Roseburg and attended Oregon State University, following in the footsteps of my brother, father, mother and grandfather. It’s safe to say we are a Beaver family. After completing my degree, in Marketing Management, I was lucky enough to get a job with the University Marketing department at OSU. I worked as the production assistant, for about a year, managing projects and generally working to keep the office in order. About two years ago our division (University Relations & Marketing) decided that we, as a university, needed to invest in social media. I took the leap and transferred to the Web Communications office as the Social Media Specialist.

In this role I continue to develop the university’s social media strategy. I manage the day to day activities on several networks and serve as a point of contact for our audiences to connect with the “OSU brand”. With the help of our team I implement strategic marketing campaigns, incorporate social content into existing university web sites and work at finding creative ways to meet the goals outlined in our university’s strategic plan.

If you want to know anything else, check out my blog, where I regularly butcher the written English language.

2)       Clearly, lots of “conversations” are taking place online about OSU.  How does your role fit in with that?

I see my role as a guy, sitting at a table, in a crowded bar. I am ready to talk with anyone who sits down (joins our network). I can help answer questions, share my experiences and stories, or learn something new. I am also listening to the conversations going on around me. If the person next to me starts talking about something I’m passionate about (OSU), I can join in and share information that might be relevant.

3)      What are some of the essential tools and services that you use in your job?

The tools I use every day aren’t too unique or special. We have communities on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Foursquare and Flickr. We have an internal Ning network that we use to organize communications efforts across campus. I use a handful of services to monitor traffic and track effectiveness including; Google Analytics, Viralheat, search, url tracking, and Google Alerts. The biggest resource at my disposal is the people in our division. We have a pretty incredible team and our leadership has organized us in a way to truly let us flourish.

Go Beavs!
